COURSE COORDINATORS

Jorge Canena (MD, PhD, Agg)
COURSE PRESENTATION
The course is exclusively dedicated to basic training in CPRE. Above all, it intends to provide the participant with knowledge that is not available or is not transmitted in the centers where the trainee starts learning.
In this course, the tools for this beginning will be made available, comprising theoretical notions how to set up and equip a ERCP room, what type of image intensifiers and how to handle/protect yourself from radiation, what type of duodenoscopes, what tools to use, how to approach the papilla and cannular, stone extraction techniques and prosthesis placement. It will also be discussed how to build a training program and legal aspects about technical complications.
The practical part will include training with clinical cases in a digital simulator, training in a mechanical simulator and live videos with procedures. As a complement to the course, a mini-internship will be available with an endoscopist with more than 4000 cases/minimum to see several executions live.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Internship or fellows in Gastroenterology who are starting/ some experience in ERCP
LEARNING OBJECTIVES >> KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS TO DEVELOP
- Introduction to ERCP, ability to set up a CPRE room, and selection of duodenoscopes
- Choice of radiation enhancers and shields (lead screens, detectors and coats)
- Existing devices in the room and how to place/number them
- Appropriate selection of patients, how to prepare a shift and how to predict/avoid/handle complications
- Appropriate selection of imaging technicians, anaesthesiologists and nurses. What training/experience is essential
- How to classify and approach a papilla. Positions of the duodenoscope. Selection of devices and basic cannulation techniques
- Sphincterotomy - utensils and how to do it
- When cannulation is difficult and how to try to get around the difficulty with advanced techniques
- Selection of devices (balloons/baskets), stone extraction and stenting
