COURSE PRESENTATION
The understanding of new pathophysiological mechanisms, and the advent of innovative drugs with the identification of therapeutic targets for severe asthma, have created renewed interest and greater attention to this important asthmatic disease phenotype.

Asthma affects 6.8% of the Portuguese population, with an estimated 7% of these patients being
classified as having severe asthma, according to the Global Initiative on Asthma (GINA) document.
These severe patients, although representing only a small percentage of the total asthmatic population, are mainly responsible for the significant impact on morbidity, mortality and health costs of this pathology.

It is thus fundamental to understand and master new and emerging concepts in this field, as well as to take the right options for disease management, namely in its most serious component, which is intended to enhance with the theoretical and practical components of this course.

It is also important to put in place the best conditions for the development of a consistent and dynamic register of this disease at a national level, to understand and activate the excellent opportunities and mechanisms of international collaboration, and to identify new models of clinical research in this relevant area of knowledge.

Physicians of the specialties of Pneumology, Immuno allergology and Pediatrics, either residents of the last year of specific training or specialists
