COURSE PRESENTATION
Every patient wants to be cared for, hopefully well and with the best treatment. Being well cared
for means a good diagnosis and therapeutic skills from the providers, but also affectivity, disposability, empathy and communicational skills. The essential medical and clinical skills are not usually a problem among doctors and nurses as they are acquired during their basic learning stages at the University and optimized regularly all along their professional life. These are, in fact, their “core business” skills. The emotional and communicational skills, however, are often forgotten or neglected because their teaching and discussion are not so often included in the academic curricula.

As the disease becomes a chronic issue, with solid stated diagnosis and therapeutic guidelines
there begins a long interaction between patients and providers and emerges the need for emotion,
empathy, optimized communication and disposability. The chronic patient is most often an outpatient progressively confined to his neighbourhood, to the house, to his home, eventually to his room; although with multidisciplinary approach the proximity support will be provided mainly by his family doctor and family nurse. It is fundamental to commit to primary care team’s communicational expertise and leadership skills in order to optimize their capacity to manage patients and families in all disease stages, based in a person-centred model.

The course integrates evidence-based theories, with a multidisciplinary approach and skills
training.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Health professionals, graduated in Medicine, Nursing, Psychology or Social Services.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES >> KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS TO DEVELOP
  1. To understand the prevalence of chronic disease and its consequences for the health care Setting
  2. To define patient and family centred care and its core concepts
  3. To differentiate between a traditional model of care and a patient and family centred model
  4. To identify key aspects of interpersonal communication skills and barriers to effective Communication
  5. To understand the vital role of effective communication in the overall patient and family Experience
  6. To identify communication methods and techniques which enhance patient experience
  7. To demonstrate the importance of governance and executive leaders in an organizational culture focused on patient and family centred care
  8. To differentiate transformational and transactional leadership and describe the impact each has on cultivating a culture of patient-centred care
  9. To describe how patient and family centred care impacts patient outcomes
ADMISSION CRITERIA
  • CV and motivation letter where the applicant shall explain the relevance of the course for his/her professional development or ambition
  • Preference will be given to health care professionals working at the hospital, primary health care setting, integrated continuous care setting and palliative care.
